Merino wool – cozy and unique organic fabric option
Merino wool, how is it different from ordinary wool?⠀
Different types of wool are obtained from different species of animals. Sheep wool is the most common type of wool: Melton, Shetland, Loden and, of course, Merino.
However, wool is a prickly material – it causes itching. It is not the most comfortable material for your skin.
Merino wool is an exception!
- Wool is an excellent insulator – it retains body heat
- Wool is waterproof – it keeps the body dry
- Wool is a very breathable material – it adapts to changing weather conditions
Merino wool is soft, not prickly like “regular” wool. Merino wool is finer than regular sheep’s wool.⠀
It is lightweight. That makes it a great option to wear.
⠀
It is very strong, durable and resilient.
There are different types of Merino wool: strong 23-24.5 micron, medium 19.6-22.9 micron, fine 18.6-19.5 micron, superfine 15-18.5 micron and ultrafine 11.5-15 micron. Ultrafine merino is suitable for blending with other yarns such as silk and cashmere.
Merino wool is recommended for everyday wear in the city, the unique properties of this wool do not prevent the exchange of warmth.Merino products are good warming, but do not overheat their owner in cold weather. Like most yarns, merino has an antibacterial effect. Merino yarn has an excellent warmth to lightness ratio as it has air between the fillings, which gives it this warmth effect.⠀
The next time you wear super lightweight wool socks, sweater or thermal underwear made from merino wool, thankfully think of Australia. Although Merino sheep originated in Portugal and Spain, they are now most common in Australia and New Zealand.
